Being involved in a business of making fur products has brought forward questions from people about how to explain why we would choose to use the fur from an animal. I am occasionally asked for the language to use if one is faced with questions from either friends, strangers, or customers who may be opposed and, sometimes, vehemently.
The following is from the Truth about Fur website; the comments are as interesting as the article!
My philosophy around life is based on harmony and being closely connected to the natural world. The earth is home to animals, plants, land and water - Nature. When I think about fur, it seems simple. We were not born with fur on our backs and that dependency of humans on animals for warmth has existed since the beginning of the human race. Some say, well, if we do not also eat the animal then it is wasted, used only for its fur and hide. But when we look to the circle of life, we can easily see that, in fact, nothing is ever wasted when harvesting fur. Some of the fur-bearing animals are eaten by humans but most of the carcasses are returned to the trapline and are, in turn, eaten by all kinds of animals and birds. This is harmony - the give and take - let us not think or let our ego tell us that we are the only beings that matter.
Wear leather, wear fur, always look for ways to live with nature.
