Back then, the wool duffel that mom used was only available in navy, light blue and ivory. I had in my head that I wanted burgundy and sulked. Usually, that got me nowhere but this time, my industrious mom went to the Hudson's Bay store and bought a burgundy wool blanket and made the most beautiful parka, fully trimmed around the hood, sleeves, and bottom with lush, flowing red fox. I could not have been more proud and I wore that amazing parka for many years.
I wish I had a picture of that coat. This photo is of me and my sisters with the parkas my mom made for all of us when I was in Grade 11. Sabrina was in Grade 12, Connie in Grade 10 and Joy in Grade 8. Mom had made these pretending they were for flight attendants (stewardess, back then) and we tried them on over and over making sure they fit because they were all about our size! Imagine our delight and her pride when she presented us with our beautiful Christmas parkas, complete with embroidery and all trimmed up with dad's wolves. I fondly remember the day like it was yesterday.
